The goal of Miracle Wish is to provide a camp for
children with rare diseases.  We are also
exploring other groups to attend the camp.  There
are many programs in place to assist families and
their children with more common illnesses.  Many
times, children with rare illnesses and their
families are left to feel alone and isolated.  We
want to change that by not only providing a
fun-filled camp experience, but also, a support
system to help families cope with the unexpected
changes that chronic illness brings to the family
unit.

Our family is affected by a condition called Arnold Chiari
Malformation. In laymen's terms, the bottom part of the
brain, the cerebellum, herniates out of the skull. Pain and
neurological symptoms are a daily occurrence.  We have
also been diagnosed with Ehlers Danlos, a collagen defect.
Collagen is the "glue" that holds the body together and
important in the embryonic stages when the skull if
forming.

This has truly been a journey for our family and we have
prayed for God to show us our "purpose" in all of this.
We believe that the purpose is to make a difference for
other families who struggle daily with these conditions.

This condition can be devastating to adults as well as
children.  Because I have the condition, I understand all
too well what my daughters must go through every day.

Our youngest daughter Katelyn received her diagnosis at
a much younger age than the rest of us.  She is not
allowed to do many things that most kids take for
granted.  Kasie, our oldest, had to give up cross country
in High School and Kellie, our middle daughter loved
being on the dance-line but that caused her symptoms to
increase.

After watching her little sister have to give up so many
activities, Kasie decided that she wanted to start a camp
for kids.  A camp where kids could be monitored medically
if necessary and could participate in fun activities and not
feel "different".

Katelyn read a book in school called
Sadako and the
thousand paper cranes.
It's about a little girl who got sick
after the bombing in Japan.  She loved to run and had to
give that up because she began to have dizzy spells.  She
learns that she has leukemia from the atom bomb.

There is an old Japanese legend that if you make 1000
paper cranes, you get a miracle wish.  Sadako passes
away before she makes the cranes, but her schoolmates
make the remainder of the cranes and bury them with her.

Katelyn was so touched by this little girls courage.  She
began making paper cranes and Kasie had the idea to sell
them to raise money for the camp and also for
organizations that help people with Chiari.
